It seems like a pretty hard question, doesn’t it? What’s worth dying for...what, in this whole world, would you be willing to lay down your life for? Maybe it’s a person, maybe it’s your country...maybe it’s a cause or a religious belief. But deciding what’s worth your life...you’d think it would be difficult, wouldn’t you?

It wasn’t for me. I had a choice once...save the cheerleader, save the world, and never survive to see it play out or just live my life and let someone else be a hero. I could have been safe, maybe even happy...saved the world by saving people from the horrors of death.

But I made a choice to go to Odessa, knowing with all certainty that I probably wouldn’t leave alive. And I didn’t...almost. I did die, but I came back...because someone else made the same choice.

Think about it...sixteen year old girl nearly gets killed, you’d think she would run like hell. I *told* her to run.

She came to me after I fell...and if she hadn’t, I don’t think I’d be here now.

So...what did I think was worth dying for? The girl? I didn’t know Claire yet, but now that I do...yeah, if I had to go back and do it again I’d die for her in a heartbeat. The accolades of being a hero, the attention? I got plenty of it at the end of the night, and it landed me in a jail cell at the local lockup. No thanks.

I was willing to die to be a hero...and I’m not being arrogant when I say that. Just...looking back on what I did, what I’ve seen and been through...it fits.

I wasn’t thinking about being a hero when I went to Odessa...I was thinking about a sixteen year old cheerleader that was going to die. I was thinking about the future...a nuclear bomb, a time traveler choosing *me* to carry his torch...to be the one they needed, the legions of people that were facing a world in ruins in that time.

When I first set out, I was thinking about a destiny greater than me...when I got there, I was thinking about doing the right thing. I just wanted to help...and when I took Sylar with me off the top of the amphitheater, all I was thinking about was saving someone from the horrors of death...and for the first time, pulling them back into the light of life.

All I was thinking about was Claire. I died to save a single life because I wanted to do something good, even though I knew I would die and it probably wouldn’t be much more than a blip on the evening news.

That’s what it is to be a hero...and that’s what’s worth dying for.

Just ask my brother...if you can.
